Teddy Kalanda Harrison (1951–2024) was a pioneering Kenyan musician and the visionary founder of the legendary band Them Mushrooms. He originally established the group in 1969 as Avenida Success alongside his brothers before rebranding in 1972, eventually leading them to become one of East Africa’s most influential musical acts. A prolific songwriter and saxophonist, Kalanda is most famous for composing the 1980 global anthem "Jambo Bwana," a platinum-selling hit that introduced the phrase "Hakuna Matata" to the international pop culture lexicon nearly a decade before Disney's The Lion King. Over a career spanning five decades, he mastered the fusion of coastal Chakacha rhythms with Benga, Reggae, and Rhumba, recording more than 15 albums and leaving an indelible mark on the Kenyan music industry before passing away in September 2024 at the age of 72.
