Moses Matovu was a Ugandan saxophonist, singer, and bandleader. He was born in Kampala in 1949. As a boy, he sang in the Namirembe Cathedral choir. He later played league football before committing to music in the late 1960s. In 1975, he co-founded Afrigo Band. He led the group for over five decades. He wrote and recorded hundreds of songs, blending traditional rhythms with rumba, funk, and jazz. Many people consider him the grandfather of modern Ugandan live music. He passed away on September 24, 2026, at the age of 77.
