Founded in 1972 amidst the rotaka student protests in Madagascar, Mahaleo is widely considered the most iconic and influential band in Malagasy history. The group, led by singer-songwriter Dama (Zafimahaleo Rasolofondraosolo) alongside six classmates, pioneered a unique folk-pop genre known as tsentsigat, which blends acoustic folk and protest music with traditional Malagasy elements like the kabosy guitar and sodina flute. Their lyrics are celebrated for their "human" and poetic depth, often utilizing traditional proverbs and metaphors to address pressing social, political, and environmental issues. Beyond their musical legacy, the members are famously known for maintaining professional careers outside of the band—ranging from medicine to sociology—as a testament to their commitment to national development and solidarity.
