Laba Sosseh grew up listening to Cuban records in West Africa. He was born into a traditional griot family in The Gambia. He started out playing music in local dance halls. Later, he moved to Dakar, Senegal.
He became the star singer of the legendary Star Band de Dakar. He sang in Spanish with a smooth, powerful voice. In 1980, he achieved a major milestone by winning one of Africa's first continental gold records.
