Christopher Monyoncho

Christopher Monyoncho, nicknamed Riyo Riebasweti (python skin), was a renowned Kenyan Benga musician from Kisii, born in 1945 in Kitutu Chache. He rose to fame in the 1970s with his debut song Emeremo Yamasamba, which criticized hazardous working conditions at Kericho tea estates, where he briefly worked before resigning in 1973. A prolific artist, he composed over 1,000 songs, often addressing socio-cultural issues, political dilemmas, and real-life stories in the Ekegusii language.
His music, characterized by slow dance rhythms and vivid storytelling, remains popular on platforms like YouTube and radio.Monyoncho was a key figure in modern Gusii music, co-founding the Kegogi Jazz band in 1975 with Charles Omweri, Andrew Gitenyi, and Moses Oyaro Memba. His songs, such as Nyang'wono, Entakana Maisiba, and Kumbe Siasa Nemechando, reflected his experiences, including a brief stint in politics as a councillor in 1992, which he later regretted due to its challenges. He faced legal battles, including a 2012 copyright dispute with Kimangu Boys Band and lawsuits over alleged incitement and indecency, which he overcame with creative lyricism.He passed away on October 3, 2013, at age 68, after falling ill following a trip to Nairobi. He left behind two widows, Zipporah and Jane, and 14 children. His music is available on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, and Boomplay, where fans can stream songs and albums like Kwini Na Biyaki and Wilson Nyakeyo. His legacy endures through his influence on the Kisii community and Benga music.
